You can transcribe without uploading by using the LiteScribe desktop app in Local Mode. It runs speech-to-text on your own CPU or GPU, so your audio file stays on your computer and is not sent to a transcription service. On-device AI then writes the notes, also without an upload. It is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Why "no upload" is the real question
For a lot of people the privacy question is simple and specific: does my file get uploaded somewhere? With most transcription tools the answer is yes, because the cloud service needs your audio to transcribe it. The LiteScribe web and mobile apps work that way too. But the LiteScribe desktop app has a Local Mode where the answer is no: the file is processed on your own machine and is never sent over the network.
No upload means no copy of your audio on a third-party server, no transcript handed to an outside AI model, and no dependency on a fast connection to move large media. A multi-gigabyte video can be transcribed where it already sits on your disk, which is both private and practical. The work is done by an on-device speech engine and an on-device AI model rather than by a remote API.
How no-upload transcription works in LiteScribe
In Local Mode, you point the desktop app at a file or record directly, and it reads the audio on your machine, transcribes it on your CPU or GPU, and separates speakers locally. There is no presigned URL, no multipart upload, and no audio stream to a cloud transcription provider. The on-device AI model then turns the transcript into a summary and action items, again locally. The finished transcript and notes are written to your own disk.
You stay in control of whether anything is ever shared. By default a recording can sync to the cloud so you can read it on another device, but you can keep any recording fully local, in which case nothing but a small usage count is recorded. So no-upload is the default behavior for the transcription itself in Local Mode, and full no-sync is a per-recording choice on top of that.
The fine print, stated up front
No-upload transcription is about your media and your transcript, and we keep the claim scoped to exactly that. The on-device models have to be downloaded once, the first time you turn Local Mode on. After that, the desktop app still reaches the network to validate your subscription and your remaining minutes on a light, periodic cadence, and it pauses new offline work if it cannot check in for about two days. That validation does not upload your audio or your transcript.
In other words, the thing you are trying to avoid, uploading your recording, does not happen in Local Mode. The thing the app still does, checking that your plan is active, is a small account call that carries none of your content. Holding those two facts separately is the honest way to describe it, and it is why we do not market the app as fully air-gapped.

What is private, and what is honest
Privacy on this page means the desktop Local Mode, where your audio is transcribed on your own CPU or GPU and an on-device AI model writes your notes, so your recording and its transcript stay on your machine. The web app, the mobile app, and the cloud path are different: they use a cloud transcription service and cloud AI, so they are not private in this sense. Local Mode is a desktop feature on the Pro and Business plans, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux after a one-time model download.
We will not call the app air-gapped, because it is not. Your content stays on your device, but the desktop app reconnects to LiteScribe periodically to validate your plan and remaining minutes, and it pauses new offline work if it cannot check in for about two days. That account check carries none of your audio or transcript. You also choose, per recording, whether to keep it local or sync it to the cloud for access on your other devices.
