What makes French and Dutch distinct
French
Francais
- Family
- Romance
- Script
- Latin (LTR)
- Speakers
- ~310 million across five continents
- Where
- France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada (Quebec), and large parts of West and Central Africa
French is full of liaison and elision: final consonants link into the next word ("les amis" sounds like "lezami") and vowels contract ("je ai" becomes "j'ai"), so word boundaries are acoustically blurred. Nasal vowels and silent endings mean the model leans heavily on context, and accented characters (e, e, a, c) must be preserved for the text to read correctly.
Dutch
Nederlands
- Family
- Germanic
- Script
- Latin (LTR)
- Speakers
- ~25 million native speakers
- Where
- The Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders), Suriname, and the Dutch Caribbean
Dutch has guttural sounds (the hard "g" and the "ch") that vary between the Netherlands and Flanders, and it forms compound words much like German ("ziektekostenverzekering" for health insurance), which must stay as single tokens. English loanwords are extremely common in Dutch business speech, so the model has to switch cleanly between Dutch and English mid-sentence.
A worked example
French (source)
Merci de votre presence; nous allons revoir les chiffres du trimestre avant de passer aux questions.
Dutch (translation)
Bedankt voor jullie aanwezigheid; we nemen de kwartaalcijfers door voordat we de vragen openen.
The French "les chiffres du trimestre" becomes the Dutch compound "kwartaalcijfers", and the formal French opening maps to the natural Dutch "Bedankt voor jullie aanwezigheid".
