What makes Dutch and German distinct
Dutch
Nederlands
- Family
- Germanic
- Script
- Latin (LTR)
- Speakers
- ~25 million native speakers
- Where
- The Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders), Suriname, and the Dutch Caribbean
Dutch has guttural sounds (the hard "g" and the "ch") that vary between the Netherlands and Flanders, and it forms compound words much like German ("ziektekostenverzekering" for health insurance), which must stay as single tokens. English loanwords are extremely common in Dutch business speech, so the model has to switch cleanly between Dutch and English mid-sentence.
German

- Latin (LTR)
- Speakers
- ~135 million native speakers
- Where
- Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and parts of Belgium and Italy (South Tyrol)
German builds long compound nouns ("Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung" for speed limit) that must be transcribed as a single token, and it relies on four grammatical cases plus verb-final word order, so the meaning of a sentence often only resolves at the end. The umlauts (a, o, u) and the eszett (ss) are meaning-bearing and must be preserved, and the formal "Sie" versus informal "du" distinction matters for tone in business notes.
A worked example
Dutch (source)
Bedankt voor jullie aanwezigheid; we nemen de kwartaalcijfers door voordat we de vragen openen.
German (translation)
Vielen Dank fuer Ihre Anwesenheit; wir gehen die Quartalszahlen durch, bevor wir die Fragen oeffnen.
The two Germanic languages align closely: the Dutch compound "kwartaalcijfers" maps almost directly to the German "Quartalszahlen", and "we nemen door" becomes the parallel "wir gehen durch".
